Obesity – a reality check? Towards a deeper understanding
June 3, 2009
Wednesday 3 June 2009
Venue: The Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 0AE
Background:
We live in a society where it is easy to be fat and hard to be fit. We know we are facing an epidemic of obesity in the west, with a rising tide of disease and death to follow. The medical community’s attempts to stop this trend resemble Canute trying to hold back the waves. Too many glib new initiatives have promised much but delivered little.
Aims:
This conference seeks a deeper understanding of the problem. If we are to turn back this tide we need to understand the complex host of biological, psychological and environmental factors that are driving it. This conference looks realistically at the problems, and aims to start a dialogue that will lead to new ways forward.
Objectives:
– To explore the complexity of the obesity epidemic.
– To examine biological, psychological and social causes of obesity.
– To examine the complex functions of food in our lives.
– To learn from current examples of failure and success.
– To give delegates the chance for discussion with experts and with colleagues from other disciplines.
