Autism Course with Michael Ash BSc(Hons) DO ND F.Dip.ION

March 12, 2009

Completed –Thursday 12 March 2009

The role of the immune system in the development and management of ASD is attracting considerable global interest. It may represent one of the most valuable interpretations of this complex group of behavioural disturbances. The mucosal immune system has the greatest number of innate immune receptors in the body and is exposed on a daily basis to a greater number of immune challenges than the rest of the immune system does in a typical lifetime. The interpretation of the challenges relies extensively on immunological tolerance being functional and proportional. The gastro intestinal tract receives its greatest immune challenge from the food selection we make. There is considerable opinion that manipulating this immune response by using amongst other agents, food selection and or mediation may lead to improvements in the health and function of individuals in the ASD spectrum.

Michael Ash BSc DO ND F.Dip ION has been involved with over 200 individuals diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and has contributed and presented to national and international conferences on the role of the mucosal immune system in ASD. This day will explore the current scientific view about this group of disorders, and will endeavour to disentangle the many varied and differing hypothesis on ASD from evidence based interventions and speculative strategies. The practitioner should leave the day feeling they are up to date on current understandings about the role of the immune system and ASD as well as having a good plan for sensible low risk intervention strategies to assist people within the ASD to manage immune disturbances and improve function.

The day is aimed at practitioners seeking clarification and comprehension of this often controversial and complex area of human health. Michael is an accomplished clinician and speaker and provides simplicity where complexity is present without diminishing the central theme. The role of micronutrients, probiotics, enzymes, behavioural training and exclusion diets will be covered as well as a review of current journals and investigative procedures.
